The Amazing Race 2022

The Huddle and North Melbourne representatives took a group of students from Werribee Secondary College to The Port of Geelong for a tour of The Spirit of Tasmania.

With guidance from the ship’s Captain, Cpt Martin Watts, the students spent the day getting a behind the scenes tour of the inner workings of the ship and found out what it takes to keep the ship up and running to ferry up to 1,800 passengers between Geelong and Devonport.

“I liked that we learned how the ship is managed as well as just how it works.” – Student

“I loved seeing the navigation controls…It was really exciting to talk to the Captain of the ship.” – Student

Throughout the course of the day, the students were introduced to several staff members, who were all happy to share their experiences working in varied rolls throughout the ship.

“It’s quite clear here that the staff really enjoy their jobs. They were really expressive about what they did, and it seems like a really good environment to work in.” – Teacher from Werribee Secondary College.

One of the career paths that some of the students found surprising on the day was biosecurity. The students learnt about the differences between the wildlife in Victoria and Tasmania, and what we as Victorians need to do to protect our friends across the sea.

“It was really informative, and it was important to learn about the bio security. It was good to know the restrictions we have in place onshore to protect Tasmania’s wildlife. I had presumed that honey would be allowed, but it’s not!” – Student

In 2017, The Spirit became the sole match-day naming rights sponsor of the Kangaroos. “The Spirit of Tasmania’s relationship with the North Melbourne Football Club since 2012 has had a positive effect on the broader economy in southern Tasmania, particularly in hotel and restaurant businesses that benefit from increased activity during football game weekends.” (TT-Line Company Pty Ltd Annual Report 2016/17).

The Huddle and North Melbourne FC would also like to acknowledge the WynBay LLEN, who we partnered with to coordinate the school’s attendance on the day.
