Beyond The Court

Last month, Huddle Up! in Community Hubs brought together 50 women from four Wyndham Community Hubs for a day of connection, competition, and celebration at our Community Basketball Gala.

Huddle Up! in Community Hubs is a partnership between The Huddle and Community Hubs Australia, delivering social sport and active recreation sessions across 46 Community Hubs nationally. The program uses sport as a tool to strengthen belonging, encourage participation, and create opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to connect.

Sport has a unique ability to bring people together across cultures, generations, and life experiences. Our basketball gala was a powerful reminder that sport is a universal language, one that breaks down barries for people to feel supported, encouraged and proud.

The day showcased incredible talent and teamwork, with players executing their gameplan, celebrating impressive shots, and sinking exciting three-pointers. While the competition was a highlight, the true success of the event was the connection created off the court.

The gala brought together three generations of support, with grandmothers proudly cheering on their daughters and grandchildren as they took part in basketball activities run by Wyndham Basketball Association. The event created a welcoming environment where participants could build confidence, develop friendships, and celebrate being part of shared success.

Off the court, the event was strengthened through the support of our program partner, La Trobe Health Services, who generously engaged with the community through interactive activations and provided giveaways for participants.

Their involvement helped create an even more engaging and supportive experience for everyone involved. Reflecting on the day, Kylie, COO of La Trobe Health Services, shared:

"My reflection driving home was that it was such a pleasure to see women of all ages able to participate in an activity that supports physical and mental health, while being held in a respectful and safe environment."

The celebration continued as Bec, CEO of Community Hubs Australia, proudly presented the winning team from Doherty’s Creek with their trophy. Standout participant Preetha was also recognised for her achievements, taking home a television prize. Reflecting on the experience, Preetha shared:

"I am just so proud of my team this year. I never thought I would win something, and I really appreciate your support and The Huddle’s part in this."

Beyond the scoreboard, the Community Basketball Gala demonstrated the power of inclusive sport to break down barriers, increase belonging, and create meaningful connections that extend beyond the game.
